Current Operational Status of Engineering Accreditation System

This page shows the current operational status of engineering accreditation of our college.

Accreditation Standards

Standards Classification Location
Standard 1 Student Evaluation Counselling Observation
Standard 2 Educational objective of program Establishment of self-purpose, Specialization by colleges
Standard 3 Learning achievement and
evaluation of program
Major-based, Basic knowledge, Practical engineering work
Standard 4 Educational elements Mathematics and basic science, Engineering theory and Design,
Basic knowledge, and others
Standard 5 Faculty Professor, expertise, Education, student guidance, volunteer works
Standard 6 Facility, source and revenue Facility and source and revenue, Intention of educational institution to support
Standard 7 Program accreditation standards Referring to target engineering program to be accredited

Standard 1 This means the educational institutions shall evaluate, consult and observe students

Qualification and academic performance of currently enrolled students and graduates are important factors when evaluating engineering education programs. The educational institution shall evaluate, consult and observe the students according to the purpose of educational program.

Standard 2 This means the educational objectives of programs shall be evaluated

It is required to check if the educational programs of the institution to be accredited satisfy the following four items.
① Are there educational purposes that meet the characterization and standards of the educational institution? And are the purposes publicized in details?
② Are there purposes of programs that satisfy the components of educational programs? And is there a process in which the purposes are determined and evaluated on a regularly basis?
③ Are there curriculum and administrative processes that guarantee the achievement of such purposes?
④ Is the evaluation system, which guarantees the achievement of purpose, continuously operated? Is there an institutional strategy in which the programs may be improved through evaluation systems?

Standard 3 Specific meanings of learning achievements and evaluation of programs

The engineering program shall be able to prove that the graduates have the following abilities related to major basics, basic knowledge and practical engineering skills.

Academic achievements of engineering programs

  • (1)Ability to apply mathematics, basic science, knowledge and theories of engineering
  • (2)Ability to understand and analyze data, including the ability to plan and carry out experiments related to the data
  • (3)Ability to design systems, elements and processes according to given requirements
  • (4)Ability to play a role as a team member in a combined school system
  • (5)Ability to recognize engineering problems, and formulate the problems to be solved
  • (6)Sense of occupational and ethical responsibility
  • (7)Ability to communicate effectively
  • (8)Ability to understand the influence caused by engineering solutions from a macro point of view
  • (9)Ability to recognize the necessity of life-long education and participate in those activities
  • (10)Basic knowledge about current affairs such as economy, management, environment and laws
  • (11)Ability to understand international culture and make international cooperation
  • (12)Ability to use technologies and methods needed for practical engineering jobs, including the latest engineering tools

Basis for Establishment of the Accreditation Standards(Learning Achievements)

During the period between September and December in 1998, the Second Subcommittee of ABEEK Incorporation Committee carried out a questionnaire survey, of which the participants were executives from the big 6 industries (Samsung Electronics, Daewoo Heavy Industry, LG Chemical, Hyundai Construction, SK Telecom, and POSCO). (What is the qualification engineers shall have? What abilities do engineering colleges have to encourage their students to cultivate?) The analysis of the questionnaire led to the following results in details. This has been reorganized according to the contents proposed by the US ABET. When compared with the ABET, the difference is that the phrase "the ability to understand international culture and make global cooperation" has been added.

Evaluation methods to check if such learning achievements(abilities) are specified

Above all, each program must be equipped with internal evaluation process, and the fact must be documented. And it shall be proved that the evaluation process is directly connected to the learning achievement evaluation, which satisfies the duty of the educational institution and the purpose of programs. The basic data used for the evaluation may consist of students' portfolio(including design projects), results of nationwide examinations, investigation of occupational achievements and career promotion activities of graduates, investigation of employers' opinion, and the employment data of graduates.

What does the portfolio mean in the concrete?

This is the detailed data in which learning contents of each subject are recorded systematically. The contents include lecture plans(purpose, contents, schedule, main points, expected effects, etc.), handout materials as teaching aids, examination questions and answers, assignments and submission, and projects and outcomes.

Standard 4 Specific meaning of educational elements

The faculty is to prove that all sorts of educational elements are developed in order to meet the purpose of the educational programs and institution through the curriculum of engineering programs. And also the students need to experience major design activities as a preparation before they start to work in engineering job sites. Each engineering program shall include the following educational elements in the concrete. ① Does the educational institution have educational purpose that meets the specialization and standards of the institution, and is the educational purpose publicized in details? ② Does the educational institution have educational purpose that meets the components of the educational programs, and is there any process in which the purpose is determined and evaluated? ③ Are there curriculum and administrative processes that guarantee the achievement of such purposes? ④ Is the evaluation system, which guarantees the achievement of such purposes, operated continuously, and is there any institutional strategy that may improve the programs through the evaluation system?

Standard 5 Faculty evaluation categories

The faculty is the core of the educational programs, so that the faculty shall meet the following conditions
① Enough number of faculty
② Specialized capability to deal with all the fields in the program
③ Relations between students and professors, Guidance and counselling for students
④ Pursuing the development of professional capabilities including engineering educational methods
⑤ Promoting relationship with industries and experts and globalization activities
⑥ The entire capabilities of professors may be evaluated on the basis of many factors such as the diversity of education and background, practical experience in engineering fields, educational experiences, communication abilities, intention to develop programs and eudcational passion, participation in professional academies, and certificates of engineer.

Standard 7 Program Accreditation Standards

Each program shall meet the program accreditation criteria that may apply to the program. The target program may be classified roughly as listed below, and the classification may be changed according to the situation. A program which does not belong to the major classification may be accredited. And if an educational program is not in accordance with academic administrative unit, it may be accredited as a minor unit. In case a program has to be involved in two or more program standards due to the title, the program shall satisfy the each standard. However, the duplicated requirements need to be satisfied once. The accreditation criteria for each program shall be prepared separately according to the Standard 4 at relevant assistant academy. The engineering programs to be included in the program accreditation criteria of ABEEK are as follows

  • - Engineering program accreditation standards for Construction Engineering and similar title: Construction Engineering fields, Landscape Engineering fields
  • -Engineering program accreditation standards for Mechanical Engineering and similar title
