Credit Completion
a) Maximum credits per semester : 12 (including compulsory subjects)
b) Credits for completion
- 1)Master's course : More than 24 credits including required subjects(the credits obtained from undergraduate-related subjects may be included)
- -However, if the major in master's course is different from the major in undergraduate course, the student shall obtain the credits from the subjects established at our undergraduate course (hereinafter referred to as 'Designated Subject') before thesis submission for the degree. And the credits are as follows.
- -A student who is similar major : This student shall obtain more than 9 in total (each subject is considered to have 3 credits).
- -A student who is different major : This student shall obtain more than 18 in total (each subject is considered to have 3 credits).
- -- It is possible for a student with similar or different major to take 'Designated Subjects' at undergraduate course up to 6 credits.
- - The credits obtained from 'Designated Subjects' are not included into the credits for completion, and in case the credits are not obtained, the student can not submit a thesis for the degree.
- -A student who has left the combined master and doctoral course halfway shall comply with the master's course.
- 2) Doctoral course: More than 60 credits including required subjects
- The credits obtained from the graduate course may be acknowledged to the maximum of 24 credits through a regular evaluation, and then the credits are included in the credits for completion of doctoral course.
- 3) Combined master's and doctoral course: More than 60 credits including required subject in the combined master's and doctoral course(the credits obtained from undergraduate-related subjects may be included.
c) Other matters to be attended to
- 1) The following required subjects are essential for completion of the course(these credits will be included in the above mentioned credits for completion)
- -Special research seminar for thesis : The students shall obtain 1 credit at each semester to have a total of 3 credits. The first semester to obtain the credit is the 2nd semester of master's or doctoral course. In the case of combined master and doctoral course, the students shall obtain 5 credits at each semester. The first semester to obtain the credit is the 2nd semester of combined master's & doctoral course.
- -Other subjects designated as compulsory in the department(such as seminars)
- 2)In the case of duplicated subjects, the credits of only one subject are included in calculations(the credits obtained from the master's course are included in the doctoral course completion assessment).
- 3) The course may be completed when the basis weight average of learning achievement is higher than 3.0 (B°).
Qualification Tests
Students may submit their thesis for degree after passing foreign language test and comprehensive examination
a) Foreign language test
- 1)Testing subjects
- -English: Students from both master and doctoral course shall get the points higher than 70 out of 100 points.
- -Second foreign language: Students from both master and doctoral course shall get the point higher than 60 out of 100 points. Students from the doctoral degree course and the combined master's & doctoral course may take two kinds of foreign language test (English and Second foreign language). However, the students from a department, in which the students in doctoral course need to take a second foreign language, may take one among German, French, Japanese and Chinese language. In the case of second foreign language other than those mentioned above, the student needs to obtain the approval of graduate school director after getting a recommendation of the head professor of the department.
- 2)Testing period: At the beginning of every semester
- 3) Retesting: In case of failure, the student may take the test again(no limit to the number of times for retesting)
- 4)Test exemption(English) : A student who has obtained higher than 750 TOEIC points within 3 years from the date of entrance exam, including the TOEFL points higher than 550.
b) Comprehensive examination
- 1)Testing subjects : The subjects will be selected among major subjects by the department. And the students shall select one of following items.
- -Master's course : 3 subjects (The students shall get the points higher than 60 out of 100 points in each subject.)
- -Doctoral course : 4 subjects (The students shall get the points higher than 60 out of 100 points in each subject.)
2) Qualification for examination
- -Master's course : Students who have completed more than 2 semesters, and obtained 20 credits in the semester when the examination is scheduled, including the students who is considered to be able to obtain 20 credits.
- - Doctoral course : Students who have completed more than 2 semesters, and obtained 56 (including the credits from the master's course that are approved) credits in the semester when the examination is scheduled, including the students who is considered to be able to obtain 56 credits.
- -Combined master's & doctoral course : The objects of this regulation are the students who are registered in the combined master's & doctoral course on the regular basis or as a temporary researcher. Such students, who have completed more than 4 semesters, and obtained 52 (including the credits from undergraduate-related subjects), or registered for the subjects can take the examination.
3) Testing period : At the beginning of every semester
4) Retesting: In case of failure, the student may take the test in the next two times regardless of the number of subject the student has failed in.
- - In case of failure in one subject, the student shall take the exam limited to the subject
- -In case of failure in more than two subjects, the student shall take the exam including all subjects
(3 subjects for master's course, and 4 subjects for doctoral course).
However, the student may take the exam, after choosing other subjects.
Thesis research plan for the degree
As the thesis research plan for the degree is the preceding requirements of thesis submission, students may submit a thesis after obtaining a prior approval on the research plan sheet.
a) Master's course : The plan sheet shall be submitted by the designated valid date, which is one semester prior to the semester when the thesis is scheduled to be submitted.
b) Doctoral course : The plan sheet shall be submitted by the designated valid date, which is two semesters prior to the semester when the thesis is scheduled to be submitted.
c) Combined master's & doctoral course : The regulation on the doctoral course is applied. However, the regulation on the master's course is applied to a student who has left the combined master and doctoral course halfway, but satisfied the standards of the master's degree.
Submission of Thesis for Degree
a) Requirements to submit a thesis
1) Master's degree course
- - A student who has obtained more than 24 credits(including the credits from undergraduate-related subjects) including the required subjects(including the subject of Special Seminar for Thesis Research dealt with in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th semester), or/and who is considered to be able to obtain 24 credit by the end of very semester. And the basis weight average of all subjects is supposed to be higher than 3.0.
- -A student who has passed a kind of foreign language test.
- -A student who has passed the comprehensive examination for master's degree course.
- -A student whose thesis research plan has been approved after assignment of thesis director. And the student must have received the directors' guidance for more than a semester from the next semester.
- -A student whose thesis is going to be examined in the final stage within 9 years from the date of entrance. However, the period related to leave of absence is excluded.
- -A student who has completed or is scheduled to complete the 'Designated subjects' for students with similar(different) major according to Clause 1 Article 15 of the Statutes of University.
2) Doctoral degree course
- - A student who has obtained more than 60 credits ((including the credits from the master's course that are approved) including the required subjects (including the subject of Special Seminar for Thesis Research dealt with in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th semester), or/and who is considered to be able to obtain 60 credit by the end of very semester. And the basis weight average of all subjects is supposed to be higher than 3.0.
- -A student who has passed the test of first foreign language (general English and major-related English). However, a student from a department which has selected a second foreign language test as one of the requirements of thesis examination shall pass the second foreign language test before thesis submission.
- - A student who has passed the comprehensive examination for doctoral course.
- -A student whose thesis research plan has been approved after assignment of thesis director. And the student who has received the directors' guidance for more than 2 semesters from the next semester.
- -A student whose thesis is going to be examined in the final stage within 15 years from the date of entrance. However, the period related to leave of absence is excluded.
3) Combined master's & doctoral course
- -A student who has obtained more than 60 credits(including the credits from undergraduate-related subjects) including the required subjects(including the subject of Special Seminar for Thesis Research dealt with in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th semester), or/and who is considered to be able to obtain 60 credit by the end of very semester. And the basis weight average of all subjects is supposed to be higher than 3.0. However, the regulation on the master's course is applied to a student who has left the combined master and doctoral course halfway.
- -A student who has passed the test of first foreign language (general English and major-related English). However, a student from a department which has selected a second foreign language test as one of the requirements of thesis examination shall pass the second foreign language test before thesis submission.
- - A student who has passed the comprehensive examination for doctoral course.
- -A student whose thesis research plan has been approved after assignment of thesis director. And the student who has received the directors' guidance for more than 2 semesters from the next semester.
- - A student whose thesis is going to be examined in the final stage within 15 years from the date of entrance. However, the period related to leave of absence is excluded.
- -A student who has completed or is scheduled to complete the 'Designated subjects' for students with similar(different) major according to Clause 1 Article 15 of the Statutes of University.
b) Request for degree thesis examination
A student, who meet all the above mentioned requirements, may request for degree thesis examination by submitting documents according to the announcement of graduate school director, after giving a presentation which is held every semester in the department. However, a student can request the examination on condition that the research achievement of supplementary treatise within last 3 years from the requisition date shall be over 100% of the thesis.
* Supplementary treatise: Research done by one - 100%, Joint research done by two- 70%, Joint research done by three-50%
* The range and weight of acknowledgement of supplementary treatise: Complying with the internal regulations of each department.
